Join the Fabulinus summer reading challenge!

According to a study in Sweden, 45% of children 1-3 lose reading ability over the summer due to not practicing outside school. In our family we tend to forget it for a long time then panic the last weeks and days before school begins.

After getting really good suggestions from teachers, readers with children around the world, we (the kids and I) have a new strategy this year: The Fabulinus reading challenge!

The children and I have agreed that the goal is to read 10-15 min seven times a week. We will do it in the morning right after breakfast. When they have seven X in a row they are entitled a “reading ice-cream”. We will alter between them reading aloud and reading on their own. I have also committed to reading when it’s quite reading.

If they miss a day with a valid excuse, they can catch up by reading double the next day. They choose what we read, and have chosen a few books altered with Fabulinus facts of course.

If you also want to download it you can find it here.

Suggestion:

  1. Print out the Fabulinus Summer Reading Challenge

  2. Think of a suitable ambition level that suits your family: Each day, three times a week, …

  3. Discuss and agree with the children the rules, ambition level, reward (if any) and routine. Getting them involved helps build commitment and take ownership from their side. Write their name and make marks in the calendar if there are special weeks (perhaps camp) or days they don’t need to read depending on what you agree upon. Let them mark each day they read.

  4. Try to find and agree on a routine where regular reading fits into the daily schedule. If you get a habit, the chance of success is much greater

  5. Be a role model and read as well (unless they are reading aloud to you of course)

  6. Reward: Some think there can be some sort of reward others don’t. There are arguments for and against and it also depends on the child and family. Arguments against are that reading itself should be the reward and the minute you take away the reward they stop reading.
